Objective

This course aims to highlight the environmental and social sustainability contributions of the general-aviation community. Learners will:

Understand the role of flight-training organizations in promoting workforce sustainability.

Recognize the business-aviation strategies supporting net-zero 2050.

Identify examples where general-aviation operations advance social or environmental goals.

Acknowledge inequities in aviation access and inclusion.

Course Description

This online course explores the role of general aviation (GA) in advancing sustainability across the global air-transport system. Learners examine how flight-training organizations contribute to social sustainability through skills development, how business-aviation operators are implementing strategies toward net-zero 2050, and how general-aviation missions can promote social inclusion and humanitarian goals. The course also considers the ongoing inequities in access to aviation and the need for broadening participation in the sector. Interactive elements help contextualize the unique needs and opportunities within general aviation.

This course is included in the Aviation Sustainability online training programme and may also be taken individually. For a foundation in aviation sustainability concepts, learners are encouraged—but not required—to complete Aviation Sustainability: Introduction to Aviation Sustainability before beginning this course.

Learning objectives

Describe the major social sustainability factors advanced by in-flight training programs.
Outline the key strategies in the business aviation plan for net-zero emissions by 2050.
List strategies for, and examples of, the use of general aviation to advance sustainability.
Outline some of the social inequities in access to aviation.

Module 5: Evaluation and certification
Module 6: Final Exam: 80% Grade mark/ 3 attempts
Module 7: Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.

Target audience

All aviation professionals seeking to develop a baseline understanding of sustainability as it applies to civil aviation, including airline, airport, and regulatory personnel, as well as professionals transitioning into aviation from other industries. No previous background or experience in sustainability is required.
